Veterans are a valued part of the Poly community. We are grateful to our veterans on campus and those dear to our students. This year will mark a colorful display of celebrations on every corner of campus, driven by personal connections and meaningful recognition of those who served our country.
In the Lower School, teachers Sarah Ferrell and Hallie Rogers commemorate Veterans Day by recognizing each student's unique connection to those who have served. The duo asked for submissions from all Lower Schoolers to share veteran stories from their lives, with submissions of stories spanning decades of service. This sparked important conversations among students about learning about military service and the many different roles to serve.
“We both have a personal connection,” said Sarah. “My dad was in the army, and also we wanted to do an authentic job of tying what we do for Veterans Day to the service learning program and practices that we are working on here in the Lower School.”
Some of the submissions included WWII veterans and active military members. Personal reasons were shared, including a desire to practice medicine in the military and to serve our country.
In the Middle School, students will write letters during advisory to veterans, current service members, and first responders through the non-profit Operation Gratitude. These notes will thank the veterans for their service.
At Morning Meeting on November 8, the Upper School will recognize the significance of the holiday and inform students how they can help commemorate it. They will build a wall of remembrance and post photos and messages of appreciation for Poly family members and recent Poly alums who have served in the US armed forces.
Thank you to all who have served in the military. Your stories and memories support learning at Poly and influence our students.
