The QSA and Culture Club are delighted to be screening this campy cult classic! But I’m a Cheerleader provides a wonderful opportunity for everyone to find comedy in queer experiences. The film stars Natasha Lyonne (Russian Doll, Orange Is the New Black) and Clea DuVall (The Handmaid’s Tale, Veep) as Megan and Graham, two girls sent off to a “sexual redirection” school out in the country to become heterosexuals. Complete with a pastel color palette and 90s satire, this film pokes fun at the illogical nature of heteronormativity and offers witty commentary on the futility of conversion camps. The comedy in But I’m a Cheerleader doesn’t sugarcoat reality; rather, it puts the absurdity of homophobia into focus.
The QSA chose to screen But I’m a Cheerleader because the film makes queer experiences accessible to all audiences and celebrates queer identity. Culture Club chose to screen this film since this campy film is culturally significant, as it gives us a poignant (albeit delirious) glimpse into past social norms, aesthetics, and attitudes.
Through this screening, the QSA and Culture Club hopes that the Poly community will come out (pun intended) and experience the joy that comes from facing oppression with comedy.
See you all there!
Back to the Big Screen, a monthly screening series, provides the opportunity for the greater Poly community to experience a selection of cinematic titles in a big screen format in our very own Garland Theater over the course of the academic year. This chance to revisit titles that we may have never seen on the big screen will encompass the screening of a select film of relevance followed by moderated discussion among those in attendance at each evening event.
