Q&A With Connie and Sherrie Wang P ’37 on Giving Back

Connie and Sherrie Wang P ’37 are new Poly parents. We chatted with the couple ahead of Giving Day on April 16 about what the Poly community means to them. Connie was born and raised in the San Gabriel Valley and Sherrie has called the area home for 40 years. Both work in the legal field, leading their children to be very persuasive when negotiating their allowances or bedtime hours. Their family loves to travel in order to share their sense of adventure and exploration with their children, so they can see that “the most beautiful thing in the world is, of course, the world itself,” according to Wallace Stevens.

What brought your family to Poly? We first heard about Poly from a family friend who is also a Poly alum. She spoke warmly and fondly of the many experiences, memories, and friends she considers life-changing during her time at Poly and beyond. It was instantly clear to us that the true value of a Poly education is much greater than the sum of its parts. As we continued to meet more families from Poly and learned more about our amazing school, it was rather easy to start envisioning ourselves as part of the Poly community.

As new parents, what does the Poly community mean to you? Even as a new Poly family, we have found Poly’s opportunities for community engagement to be profoundly meaningful and rewarding. These opportunities have also allowed us to get to know Poly’s community as well as forge meaningful relationships with other families. The recent Eaton wildfire put our community to the test, and it has been nothing short of awe-inspiring to see how the community has come together at every level to rebuild and strengthen what the fires tried to destroy. We are also particularly proud of being a member of a community that strives to be inclusive where every member feels seen, valued, and supported. We love that Poly places emphasis on the values of personal responsibility and service to others. You truly can feel the warmth of the community the minute you step on campus.

What inspires you to give to Poly? We are guided by the old adage that what we put into something is what we receive in return. Poly’s academic excellence, amazing teachers, incredible staff, and outstanding programs are the result of contributions made by those before us. As current beneficiaries of such an incredible ecosystem, it is incumbent on us to embody the spirit of stewardship and give back where we can and make investments in the promises of Poly’s mission and community.

What are you looking forward to for your first Giving Day? We hope to celebrate Poly and the power of giving back in support of every person, program, activity, and space that form the Poly experience.

How do you hope to stay involved at Poly?
In the immediate future, both of us will continue to volunteer our time as Treasurer and Historian of the Lower School Parent Organization. We enjoy the many opportunities to meet and collaborate with other parents while getting to know all facets of the Poly organization. We will also continue to support the fundraising efforts of the Advancement Office by making connections with other families and sharing our enthusiasm for investing in our amazing school through the Poly Fund.
