Día de los Muertos is a holiday observed throughout Latin America and the US that celebrates and honors the lives of loved ones who have passed away. It is a time to remember and connect with those who are no longer with us through joyful celebration of their lives and their lasting impact. The ofrenda (altar) is a key element of this tradition, where families place pictures, mementos, and offerings such as food, candles, and marigolds to invite the spirits of their loved ones to return for a brief reunion.
All are invited to participate in our community ofrenda by sharing pictures of their loved ones as a way to collectively honor their memory. This practice also acknowledges the different ways people experience grief and loss. While mourning can be deeply personal, the creation of an ofrenda allows for the celebration of life, a sense of connection, and a healing space where memories are kept alive. Please submit photos of loved ones to cgonzalez@polytechnic.org or uresendiz27@students.polytechnic.org.
We look forward to celebrating this meaningful holiday and enjoying this film about family, culture, and the endurance of love with you!
