Back to the Big Screen with the Armenian Club Present: Amerikatsi

In a lead-up to Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day (April 24), the Poly Armenian Club brings a very special screening of the 2022 film, Amerikatsi by actor-director Michael Goorjian to our campus community. The story follows “Charlie”, played by Goorjian, a former child refugee returning decades later in 1948 to his homeland of Armenia, then newly under Soviet rule. Taking advantage of Joseph Stalin’s repatriation program for displaced Armenians, in this comedy Charlie quickly finds himself, due to happenstance, sent to prison for the crime of wearing a polka dotted tie and in the process learning more about his heritage. Writing for Variety author Siddhant Adlakha notes: “Written and directed by Michael A. Goorjian, who also stars in the leading role, it’s a moving work about diasporic yearning, coming to us as history repeats itself, after more than 100,000 ethnic Armenians were forced to flee Nagorno-Karabakh earlier this year.” Amerikatsi won the Best Narrative Feature award at the Woodstock Film Festival, the Audience Award at the Hamburg Film Festival, and the Best Narrative Feature at the Beloit International Film Festival.
Back to the Big Screen, a monthly screening series, provides the opportunity for the greater Poly community to experience a selection of cinematic titles in a big screen format in our very own Garland Theater over the course of the academic year. This chance to revisit titles that we may have never seen on the big screen will encompass the screening of a select film of relevance followed by moderated discussion among those in attendance at each evening event.
