We thought you might like to know what your students have been focusing on in their college class since our last newsletter. Read on for our class update.
Week 4: Students began working on their résumés using a program provided through Naviance. Students will have access to this résumé program throughout the summer and during next school year so they can continue to update it as needed.
Week 5: Counselors discussed the different types of educational opportunities available: small liberal arts colleges, universities, colleges abroad, gap year, etc. We also discussed the importance of being able to articulate the factors students are looking for in a college experience beyond a strong academic program (i.e. a specific major, dual degree programs, arts program, etc.)
Week 6: We covered the parts of a typical college visit: information sessions, student-led tours, possible classroom visits, and/or meetings with coaches. We suggested things students might look for and places on campus they might want to visit. We also helped them to think about questions they might ask and warned them of the type of questions to avoid asking.
Week 7: This week the department assigned senior panelists to each class. Seniors answered questions, gave personal advice, and shared their experiences about the college process.
Week 8: Spring break! No classes are held this week, but counselors have assigned students an assignment to complete—“college visit checklist” where students can record impressions from their college visits. Should students not have a formal visit planned, they are encouraged to visit the Claremont Colleges, Occidental, UCLA, and USC, as each represents a distinct type of campus community.
