College Counseling Class

We finished the fifth week of College Counseling class and want to reiterate the importance of this course. Counselors have a curriculum that we are following each week, and cover a lot of material. This week, counselors are discussing the different types of educational opportunities available, particularly small liberal arts colleges and research universities. Counselors will also discuss the importance of being able to articulate the factors students are looking for in a college experience beyond a strong academic program (i.e. a specific major, dual degree programs, arts program, etc.).

Read on for an outline of the topics we have covered so far in class.
Week One: Introduction to class curriculum and Naviance program. Students were introduced to the journaling system we have launched this year. We will begin every class with an in-class journal exercise, followed by the topic and lecture of the week. Students were also shown how to log in and navigate the Naviance system. They explored several college search options and learned how they could view maps of schools across the United States where Poly students apply and enroll. They also learned how they can add prospective colleges to their lists online and learn more about those schools through various Naviance links. Finally, students were introduced to the online document library where handouts are stored from each class session.

Week Two: Who am I? This week students completed an abbreviated version of the Myers-Briggs personality test. Students were asked to reflect the Myers-Briggs result as their journal assignment. They also completed an in-class journal exercise, listing three most distinguishing and most admirable qualities. Parents, be sure to ask them to share their results with you.

Week Three: What is a college major? Is it okay to be undecided? What are my academic interests? This week, students took an interest inventory that ties in personal learning styles and preferences with potential college majors and careers. Our goal is not to pigeonhole students or force them into thinking they need to choose a major—most of them will change their minds in college two or three times—but rather to open them up to possibilities. We want our students to enter college eager to try new things and be well-informed about academic areas that may be of interest and worth exploring. For those students who do have a specific academic interest in mind, we also showed them how they can use the Occupational Outlook Handbook online to explore the projected outlook of jobs and careers related to majors during the next decade.

Week Four/Five: Resume and Common Application Activity Grid—Students began working on their résumés using a program provided through Naviance. Students will have access to this résumé program throughout the summer and during next school year so they can continue to update it as needed.
