Make a note of college essay workshop dates and deadlines

Each fall, the College Counseling Office hosts a series of essay writing workshops to assist seniors in completing their college essays.  For those students who would like to get a jump start on their essays before school begins, a couple workshops will be offered on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 19-20. Workshops are optional and are hosted by the college counselors, English Department Chair Cotter Donnell, and Writers' Center Director Grace Hamilton. Students are interested in attending some portion (or all) of the workshop, should RSVP to Ms. Hernandez by Friday, Aug. 16.  (Note: These workshops are always offered to students at no additional cost.)

The workshop schedule for the summer workshops is as follows:

Day 1: Monday, Aug. 19
11 a.m. — Presentation on the college essay from an admissions officer, Upper School Library
Noon to 6 p.m. — Small group writing sessions in one-hour slots (reservations required), in Haaga

Day 2: Tuesday, Aug. 20

If students are unable to attend this workshop, there will be additional essay writing workshops held each month during the fall on the following dates:

Monday, Sept. 23
4 to 7 p.m. in Haaga Classroom A

Wednesday, Oct. 16 (PSAT Day)

(Note: Priority will be given to UC essays)

Sunday, Nov. 3
Noon to 3 p.m. UC line-by-line application workshop in Gosney

Monday, Nov. 25
4 to 7 p.m. in Haaga Classroom A

Monday-Thursday, Dec. 9-12
4 to 7 p.m. Individual appointments and small group writing sessions (reservations required), in Haaga

In addition to the events scheduled above, students are also welcome to schedule individual meetings with their counselors throughout the fall to brainstorm essay topics and to review essays.

So that counselors may allocate the time that is necessary to review essays, students are asked to plan ahead. Students with Nov. 1st deadlines should get copies of their essays to their counselors no later than Friday, Oct. 25.

Students with UC essays should have their essays to their counselors no later than Friday, Nov. 15.

Finally, students with Jan. 1 deadlines should have their essays to counselors by Friday, Dec. 13 so they can receive feedback prior to winter break. The College Counseling Office closes for winter break on Dec. 20, and the counselors will not be available over the holiday. To help students work toward the goal of completing all of their applications prior to winter break, there will be a counselor “on call” to provide essay and application assistance each night during the week of Dec. 9-13 from 4 to 7 p.m.

Note: All of these dates will be included on the senior year calendar that will be distributed later this summer; this information also will appear on the College Counseling - Seniors and Parents community group page on MyPoly.
